Recovery from sex addiction is possible but most sexaholics find the idea of years of sexual sobriety difficult to comprehend. Here is what we did to find a solution to and freedom from sex addiction.
Finding a Solution to Sex Addiction
#01
Get a sponsor and work the 12 steps
We are a 12 step fellowship. The 12 steps are what we have to offer. And they work when we work them.
Seek out an SA member who has the quality of recovery you want to be a guide through the 12 steps. You will find sponsors at meetings. Women are encouraged to choose other women and men to choose men.
Ask for a sponsor to come forward at a meeting. A good sponsor will be actively working the steps and will be available to take you through the steps, answer questions and assist you in recovery by listening to you and sharing his/her experience, strength and hope.

#02
Sponsor others
Nothing is more effective experiencing freedom from sex addiction than helping other sex addicts through the 12 steps. This is the testimony of the first recovered alcoholics and continues to be the experience of many SA members.
The famous Baltimore, Maryland Drug Study established the close relationship between sponsorship and abstinence for Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous Members. Over the year, those who were “NOT SPONSORED” showed a 44.7% abstinence rate and those who were “SPONSORED” showed a 39.1% abstinence rate. However, 75% of those who SPONSORED OTHERS maintained abstinence. In other words, continuing to take others through the 12 steps resulted in the experience of lasting sobriety.

Come along to meetings
Working the steps and taking others through the steps is vital to permanent recovery from sex addiction. We also find meeting together important to help newcomers, share the solution and to continue to carry the message of recovery.
Email or call us for details of meeting venues.
SA meetings are for sexaholics only. Family members and friends can contact S-Anon.

#04
Calling other members
Many members find it helpful to engage with the fellowship through reading literature and speaking on the phone. These tools are not a replacement for working the 12 steps and sponsoring others, but instead supplement these vital activities.
Ask other members for their numbers. Volunteer your own if you feel right about it.
#05
Reading literature
You can find out more about SA’s 12-step programme of recovery through these resources:
- The AA “Big Book”: the original text for all 12-step recovery which contains clear cut directions to recover from sex addiction.
- Sexaholics Anonymous (also called the “White Book”): a commentary on the Big Book and 12 and 12 specifically for sex addicts.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions (“The 12 and 12”): a later commentary and companion to the Big Book covering the 12 steps and 12 traditions. The AA “Big Book” and the “12 and 12” are generally available from the uk literature officer, your local group’s literature officer or at any AA meeting or service office.
